HOW MASS GAINERS WORK TO HELP YOU GAIN WEIGHT

Hi again,
So, time and time again, I have come across people who need to gain more weight, despite eating regularly.
How can this be? How is it possible to eat well, really well and not be able to gain more weight?
This is probably due to the fact that you are a "HARD GAINER", a term used to describe those people who find it hard to gain extra pounds. Normally, hard gainers tend to have higher than normal metabolisms so they effectively burn calories, and tend to have been, or still are, quite physically active.
A mass gainer supplement is formulated for hard gainers to be able to surpass their daily calorie consumption in the most convenient way possible. Most healthy adults require about 2000 calories intake per day. An athlete/weight lifter will require more, sometimes up to 4000 calories or more. If the body consumes more than you give it, then, you will have a hard time gaining weight/mass. If you are athletic and increase the training intensity without increasing the fuel (calories) then you will end up burning existing muscles to provide fuel for sustaining life (that includes thinking!!!), leading to WASTING where you get leaner and skinnier, not as buffed up as you should be.
Mass gainers are formulated from a combination of protein, carbohydrates, small-branch chained fatty acids and in some cases, creatine. The mass gainer is made in such a way that the body is able to absorb the contents very fast into the bloodstream, about 45 minutes to 1 hour. This means that there will be enough carbs to start the insulin spike needed to drive in nutrients from the blood stream into the cells that need the nutrients. Therefore, the nutrients will be very available for the cells within a short time of consuming the mass gainer (unlike a normal meal that will take about 3 to 4 hours). This comes in handy after working out, where the body will go into the ANABOLIC phase (building and repair). This also reduces the post-work out pains associated with microscopic tearing during exercise.
Most mass gainers will give about 500 to 1000 calories per serving, and combined with a normal daily intake of 2000 calories, you are able to meet your caloric requirements without burning off extra muscle tissue for energy.
Please note, you should not use mass gainers if you are trying to reduce your body-fat content, or trying to lose weight. It will defeat the purpose of losing the fats, plus it will also give you very expensive urine. If you are trying to lose your fat content but you need to increase your energy levels, you are better off using pre-work out vitamin complexes. Vitamin complexes are generally used to increase vitality, concentration levels, appetite as well as energy levels, and are widely used by many people to increase their quality of life. There are vitamins specially for athletes (pre-work out supplements) that have higher daily value of vitamins and minerals content, and in some cases, creatine.
Otherwise, if you need to, enjoy a yummy shake of mass gainer shakes, and be on your way to your ideal athletic physique.

Anabolic state, Catabolic state and your Weight

Hello again,
Today we look at the anabolic state, catabolic state and how they influence your weight.

During an anabolic state, tissues found within the human body obtain energy for growth and maintenance. Anabolism requires energy to occur, unlike catabolism, which actually provides the energy source for the anabolic state to take place.

The body faces a catabolic state during normal metabolic functions. This idea, opposed to an anabolic state, actually defines the breakdown of foods and nutrients so that they will later have the ability to build up and add to the muscle or tissue growth process.

Understanding Anabolism
The opposite of breaking down, defined as building up, serves as a perfect explanation of anabolism. The anabolic state acts as the complete opposite of the catabolic state, one that requires no energy to occur.
Through the initial catabolic process of breaking down larger food molecules into smaller energy sources, the body oxidizes these tiny chemical strands and uses most of the energy to drive anabolism forward.

Realistically, if humans were able to maintain a constant state of pure and healthy anabolism, everyone would have bulging muscle mass on every region of their bodies. Many professional sports athletes have used anabolic-inducing drugs or supplements that promote absorption  of food energy and protein into muscle tissue.

In order for the body to encounter an anabolic state, it must consume a source of energy. Foods or supplements with helpful nutrients enable muscle tissue to receive said energy. However, when individuals do not consume enough food, a higher rate of catabolism will occur. This effect ultimately harms healthy muscle and body tissue after extended periods of time.

In extreme cases of self starvation, the body begins to deplete its essential and healthy fat deposits along with muscle tissue in order to survive.

The anabolic state helps people achieve their fitness goals. Not only does anabolism help muscle tissue grow and maintain a healthy state, bone density also has the ability to increase through the anabolic process.
In order to help the energy-needy areas within the human body, proper diet and exercise remain of high importance. Those who face more physical activity will generally need more energy in order to counteract the catabolic state. Some forms of exercise actually break down muscle tissue and release hormones that further act to deplete energy storage.

People who intend to lose weight, gain muscle or maintain a desirable physique all similarly benefit from consuming nutrient-dense foods before and after physical activity. This helps provide the body with energy which will eventually reach muscle tissue.

Understanding Catabolism

In the most basic written form, the catabolic process involves anything and everything that naturally occurs or induces the breakdown of larger molecules into several smaller building blocks. These separate parts eventually combine in a process known as anabolism, which greatly benefits muscle tissue growth. By defining the catabolic state within the human body, avid fitness enthusiasts have the ability to achieve their goals more easily. For example, by knowing that muscles actually endure a break down phase because of hormones released during each workout, you have the ability to counteract this phenomenon by consuming high-quality nutrient sources before, during or after your exercise sessions.

The catabolic process releases energy that works to help maintain proper muscle activity. The oxidation process that occurs during catabolism helps synthesize the necessary chemical building blocks that adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Multiple ATP molecules give cells the power to transfer more energy produced during the catabolic process to the anabolic process. In basic terms, catabolism acts as the sole energy provider for the proper preservation and growth in nearly all cell.

Aside from helping fuel the human body with energy that's necessary to grow and function, catabolism sometimes acts as a negative process that leads to adverse health effects. This does not occur often, but when the body has an extremely high rate of catabolism, as opposed to anabolism, muscle tissue and essential fat deposits found within the body become depleted.

For example, during rest, the body tends to recover and remain in an anabolic state. When the body does not properly rest for long periods of time, as in prolonged vigorous exercise, muscle tissue will continue to break down. Without proper nutritional intake, the natural process of tissue growth and repair will not take place.
Even though this does not sound particularly problematic, simply imagine remaining in a constant state of depletion. Quite literally, when the actual muscle tissue in the body endures lengthened stretches of the catabolic state, it eats away at itself in an attempt to find a source of stored energy.

Most people who live healthy lifestyles which include proper diet and exercise do not encounter catabolic problems. However, high levels of stress and hormone imbalances do trigger adverse effects that harm the natural balance between anabolism and catabolism.

WHAT FAT BURNERS ARE ALL ABOUT

FAT BURNERS/THERMOGENICS

Supplementing with thermogenics can make your journey to shred-ville a lot easier. But, the thermogenics (fat burners) are not a magic silver bullet.
In essence, thermogenics are designed for the main purpose of ASSISTING in weight loss. Many people have tried and tried to lose weight but they seemingly cant. Hours in the gym, diets, detox programs and wellness programs seemingly cannot help shed the weight. This may be due to two main reasons:
You have hit a plateau
You have a health issue that is preventing you from effectively losing weight. This is mostly due to thyroid problems which throw off your metabolism, or diabetes, high blood pressure which may inhibit normal body functioning or limit your ability to exercise aggressively.
So, thermogenics (fat burners) are designed for you if you are in the first category; you have been losing weight or have tried to, but, you have HIT THE PLATEAU!!
Fat burners are quite powerful weight loss products, especially when combined with a training program and/or diet. But, they are a waste of money if you pop them, and continue eating unhealthy and being sedentary/inactive.
Even if you lose weight using fat burners, an unhealthy lifestyle will catch up with you eventually, and terminal conditions will definitely crop up, and then, you may not have the option to exercise, diet or supplement so as to get back in shape.
Thermogenics (fat burners) are designed to enhance lypolysis (breaking down stored fats to produce more energy). They also stimulate the nervous system, hence giving you an edge during work outs. You will notice increased mental concentration and energy when you work out, be it in the gym or even just walking home (or to the supermarket…) or even when doing house chores.  Therefore, fat burners will work best if you push your body to use up the stored fats!!! By pushing, I mean getting off the sofa and using that extra energy to do something, and then the body will burn MORE FATS to supplement the energy you just used, and thus a cycle is established. (***you can buy your thermogenics here***)
Now, your body will get used to the new levels in due time and again, HIT A PLATEAU!!! Your body will have gotten used to the new levels of fats consumption, and since there is no extra effort needed to fuel your daily activities, it will maintain that new ‘weight’ no matter how long you diet or exercise (unless you go into starvation mode – malnutrition will kill you!!!). Either you increase your intensity when working out, or you decrease what you eat.
This does not mean that you will increase the dosage of the thermogenics (fat burner) so as to continue losing the body fats. You will instead go off the fat burner for a week or two, then resume for another three to four weeks. This way, your body will not stay in the plateau, but increase the level of fat burning until your body fat content is at a reasonable minimum. This is what is referred to as cycling. Afterwards, you will have to MAINTAIN a healthy lifestyle, and you will very easily maintain the new weight without having to go back on the thermogenics (fat burner).

The key difference between FAT-LOSS and WEIGHT-LOSS

Hello again,

So, after extensive reading about having an athletic body, it has become obvious that you will need to have muscle. Without the muscle, you will not be able to perform even basic exercises. You will also work those muscles on a regular basis. After stalking numerous athletes, weightlifters, wrestlers and fitness models, it is also sung that you have to burn fats. And it has been proven over and over and over, the more muscles you have, the more fats you burn.

Being heavy is usually not a fat issue only. Fats and muscles have different densities. While fats are lighter, muscles ate more denser and compact, thus use up less space than fats. That is why, two people may weigh the same, while one is trim and lean , the other will be bursting out of their skin.

Your body will normally store excess food as fats, in readiness for a shortage. Most of the fats are stored under the skin while some are stored around organs. Fats stored around the vital organs shield them from impact shock. Excess fats will however strain the normal functioning of these organs. Normally, your body will use up the calories available in the blood to fuel the vital organs like the brain, heart and so on, to ensure that life is supported. When you skip an occasional  meal, your body will turn on the stored fats and use them to fuel the body as required, and then compensate on the next meal. Therefore, when you gradually reduce your food intake, you will force the body to turn on the stored fats so as to provide fuel. This is why weight watchers count their calories.
***NOTE: skipping meals will not enhance this process, it will reverse it. Your body’s metabolism is synchronized with your food intake sessions. When you skip meals on the regular, your body will slow down the metabolism, hence slowing down fat burning to whenever necessary. This is because your body is aware that there is a food shortage and will downsize to stay alive for as long as possible. When you partake your next meal, your body will store as much as possible in readiness for the ‘continued food shortage’. Even if you are quite active, you will not lose much weight since your body is adapting to using as little food as possible. This explains why some people lead very active lifestyles and eat very little, yet they cannot lose weight at all, and also why some people are sedentary and eat in buckets, yet they never gain as much as a gram!

When you exercise regularly, your body goes into longer periods of anabolic state. Its in this state that the body will use up available nutrients and energy to rebuild and ‘refurbish’ itself in readiness for the next workout. Particularly, muscle building and regeneration is more pronounced at this time. The more intense your workout is, the longer your anabolic state. Particularly, strength training is known to trigger the body into a longer anabolic state when compared to cardio, hence lots of weight training by weightlifters and fitness models. The more muscle you build, the more nutrition you need to fuel their activities and, and hence the more fats you burn.
If you work out intensely and are already building muscles, but your food intake remains low, your body, via the liver, will turn on the muscles to provide the necessary proteins and calories that are needed to rebuild cells and sustain life. This eventually leads to wasting away of the muscle mass.

So, as your training grows more intense, you will notice that you no longer gain muscle, but you are losing weight if not maintaining it yet you are very lean. This is the best time to increase your food intake gradually, especially proteins. This may be done by extra meals or use of already balanced nutritional supplements, especially mass gainer formulas.

HOW "Thermogenic" Products HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

Hello again,
Today we look at "Thermogenic" Products'. Supplement promoters have created a new marketing term, "thermogenics," which literally means "heat generation." The idea is that these products alter the metabolism in a way that causes the body to use more energy. The effect is a more energetic you, and accompanying weight loss. These products tend to be alike in their active ingredients, although some variations are seen.

How They Work
Many studies have been conducted on thermogenic substances, which include caffeine, capsicum (chilli), ephedra and ginger. All work similarly in that they stimulate the body, causing it to burn more calories with less overall effort. The assumption is that those already on a diet and consuming fewer calories will burn a higher percentage of fat because lower amounts of recently consumed carbohydrates will be readily available to be metabolized. So, the body will be burning its stored energy (fat) as opposed to that which is readily available (carbs). Thermogenic supplements  also work as diuretics, which means that they excrete water from the body by elevating the rate of urination. This is another source of short-term weightloss.

***you can buy your thermogenics/fat burners here***

Not the Only Answer
Studies agree that thermogenics are NOT the only answer. You can’t pop these pills once a day and expect to lose weight just like that. However, scientists have found that when combined with diet and exercise, these supplements can have a positive, short-term effect. As noted above, these pills won’t have any effect on your fat levels unless they are consumed in combination with a lower calorie diet. Therefore, you won’t get a miracle, but you may get better short-term results.

Adapted Tolerance
Notice the caveat of “short-term” results above. This is very important to consider when using thermogenics. Studies have shown that these supplements can have a beneficial effect for the first 4-6 weeks (almost 2 months)  of use, but that their overall affect wanes after that period. This is basically due to natural adaptation by the body. Your body will get used to having the chemicals present and alter its energy consumption accordingly. This is a process known as adapted tolerance. In extreme cases, your body can become so adapted to the chemicals that you become dependent on them. In those cases, you could even be subject to mild withdrawal symptoms once you come off of the drug. In any case, taking these supplements beyond the 4-6 week threshold is not recommended.

More Research Necessary

Another thing to note is that dietary/food supplements are rarely subject to FDA regulations. Caffeine is a relatively harmless diuretic, but ephedrine has been known to cause severe cases of dizziness, changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate and headaches in some people.

You should always ask your physician before taking any kind of over-the-counter medication, especially those that are not regulated by the government.

The  'thermogenics' will include

Ma huang is one of several names on herbal products containing members of genus Ephedra. Ma huang products are sold for weight control or as "energy boosters." The "energy" in Ma huang is a drug which stimulates the central nervous system producing a feeling of high energy, well-being and alertness. (***The effects of Ma huang on the nervous system are similar to amphetamine and caffeine)

Kelp is an imprecise generic term for the ash obtained from burning any kind of coarse seaweed. Kelp has been used in folk medicine for many ailments. The active ingredient which may be in kelp is iodine. The concentration of iodine in seaweeds is extremely variable both among different species and within the same species. Iodine's important role in thyroid function is well known, but iodine deficiency is almost unknown in this age of iodized salt.

Gotu kola. In Sri Lanka it was observed that elephants, mythologized for their longevity among beasts, are fed extensively on gotu kola. This gave rise to the reputation of the herb as a longevity promoter, and a remedy for a dozen other ailments, for people. Scientific studies have shown that in relatively large doses the drug has a definite sedative effect in small animals. Also it has exhibited some anti-inflammatory activity, and apparently stimulates wound healing.

Ginseng has some documented mild useful physiological effects in small animals. Probably the best documented side effects of ginseng are insomnia, diarrhea, and skin eruptions. However, even the prolonged or excessive use of ginseng appears to involve relatively low risk. Although purported to increase sexual experience or potency, there is no scientific evidence to support this. Ginseng is intensively searched for in the wild. It has been declared an endangered species and quality root retails at more than $20 an ounce.

White willow bark is claimed to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and swollen joints due to rheumatism and arthritis, and help neuralgia. These claims are probably true. White willow contains salicin which is converted in the body to salicylic acid, the same active ingredient that is in aspirin.

Ginkgo biloba. Standardized ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) is used extensively in Europe for ailments associated with decreased cerebral blood flow, particularly in geriatric patients. It is extensively prescribed by physicians. Clinical and pharmacological studies have shown that GBE promotes vasodilation and improved blood flow in the arteries and capillaries, and that GBE reduces the clotting time of blood. This may be of concern to those already taking anticoagulants. Very large doses of GBE may cause restlessness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and other unpleasant effects of a mild nature. GBE has not obtained the status to which it may be due.

Chromium picolinate is made in the liver and kidney and binds with minerals to move them around the body. Chromium's biologically active form is called glucose tolerance factor (GTF), which helps the body use glucose. Research has shown that if blood glucose levels were normal and there were no signs of chromium deficiency, there will be no response to chromium supplements. While glucose metabolism is a major factor in diabetes, studies have found that most persons with diabetes are not chromium deficient. Although a severe chromium deficiency can lead to elevated blood glucose levels, this is not a factor in causing diabetes.

As with all things under the sun, common sense is necessary. Always find out about the products before you use them

How to curb cravings with Appetite suppresing amino acid - Phenylalanine

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that acts as an appetite suppressant by administrating the release of an intestinal hormone—cholecystokinin—which signals the brain to feel satiated after eating. After being triggered by phenylalanine, cholecystokinin (CCK) is released as food enters the stomach. It tells the digestion to slow down and then gives the message to the brain that you are 'full' . . . so your appetite naturally decreases. This takes approximately 20 minutes (that's why most fat loss products will direct users to use at least 30 minutes before meals).

If you take phenylalanine 30 minutes to one hour before eating a meal, you'll notice that you'll feel full faster—so you don't fill up on extra calories that you don't need! And not only that, you'll stay full longer so you don't get that late afternoon or after-dinner snack attack. Before you know it, those extra pounds you've been carrying around will start to melt away—safely and effortlessly.

Phenylalanine is found in a variety of foods, including almonds, avocados, bananas, brown rice, cheese, corn, eggs, fish, lima beans, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and soy products. Problem is, you'd have to eat lots of extra calories in order to get an efficacious amount. That's why it is conveniently available as supplement form.

Three forms of phenylalanine

Phenylalanine, along with two other amino acids, tyrosine and methionine, helps the body produce adrenaline. It is also a precursor for other proteins and enzymes, including norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine. It is available in three different forms: L, D, and DL. The L form is the most common and is the type which is incorporated into your body's proteins. The D form acts as a painkiller, and the DL is a combination of the two.
  1. D-Phenylalanine—one of the three forms of phenylalanine—increases endorphins, your natural pain relievers, thus aiding in pain relief and mood elevation. It has been found to be safer than and as effective as commonly prescribed and/or over-the-counter drugs.12 It can help alleviate stubborn pain as well as depression, offering hope to individuals who had formerly been despondent about chronic situations.
  2. L-Phenylalanine converts to phenylethylamine (another form of L-Phenylalanine which is also an ingredient in the Lipo-6X fatloss formula), an amphetamine-like stimulatory compound and also converts to norepinephrine and dopamine (via tyrosine) which are mood elevating, motivating, stress protective body chemicals.
  3. DL-Phenylalanine (DLPA) is a combination of L-phenylalanine and D-phenylalanine. DLPA has also been found to be beneficial in combating depression, elevating mood, producing a feeling of satiety, and boosting the body's natural pain-killing response.
***NOTE: Phenylalanine should not be taken by pregnant women, or those who suffer from high blood pressure, phenylketonuria, melanoma or anxiety attacks. It should not be used if taking MAO inhibitor drugs, commonly prescribed for depression.
